Fight against gentrification?
On the first of May, JanTien squatted the Carolus cinema. This building had been left empty for three years. Since moving in, we’ve been organizing walk-ins for people from the streets, weekly workshops, expositions and movie nights.
From the start, the municipality and owner have tried non-stop to put a stop to our cause. Although squatting is illegal, we see no other options in a society where living rights, cultural hotspots and self-expression have had to yield to market values and corporate interests. Over the past few years we have seen our city be gentrified. There are only a few (affordable) places left where young people can grow and express themselves.
